Demographic response to the manipulation of adult females in corn mouse populations Ecología austral
Gómez,María D; Steinmann,Andrea R; Priotto,José W.
Variation in population abundance is a consequence of changes in demographic parameters such as survival and recruitment. These demographic parameters can be affected by intraspecific competition, thus adults may play an important role infl uencing the survival and/or reproduction of juvenile individuals in many species of small mammals. We present an analysis of Calomys musculinus populations using capturemark- recapture models in order to evaluate the effect of female removal on their demography. The study was carried out in four enclosures during two different periods: a reference period and a treatment period, with the removal of adult females. Reference period was analyzed to describe population demography without manipulations. In treatment period,...

Demographic structure of a threatened palm (Euterpe edulis Mart.) in a fragmented landscape of Atlantic Forest in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Melito,Melina Oliveira; Faria,José Cláudio; Amorim,André Márcio; Cazetta,Eliana.
At the northern limits of the range of the palm species Euterpe edulis there is an endemic ecotype, known as the "Bahia" ecotype, which is distinguished by its reddish crownshaft and low seed production. Unfortunately, little is known about its demographic characteristics. Therefore, we contrasted the density of E. edulis populations in the Una region, in the southern part of the Bahia state, Brazil, with that of other populations of the species in southern and southeastern Brazil. In addition, within the Una region, we compared a long-protected forest fragment (F1) with three recently protected fragments (F2, F3, and F4), in terms of demographic parameters and plant size, in order to determine what influence, if any, time since protection has on E. edulis...

Since spat mortality events that were firstly detected in 2008, Mediterranean shellfish industry seeks to exploit the Pacific oyster spat from lagoon natural recruitment. The CRCM, Cepralmar and Ifremer developed accordingly a research project named PRONAMED Phase 1 and 2 - 2010-2014, in order to define the economic potential of spatfall and improve knowledge of the reproductive cycle of Crassostrea gigas in this specific environmental context. The results of the past three year‘s study (2012, 2013, 2014) showed that broodstock have the ability to provide larvae after sexual maturation and spawning. A coincidence was noted between moon phase (new and full moon) and spawnings with an amplifying effect of storms on the intensity of spawning (Ubertini et al....

Déterminisme du recrutement. Séminaire de Nantes, 2-4 juillet 1984 ArchiMer
Ifremer.
The causality of recruitment is of paramount importance for the progress of the control of marine living resources, but its study remains technically complax. The aim of the Nantes panel was to evaluate the state of advancement of three running programs on exploited species (sole, scallops and oysters), and to set out the basis of a wider national program of interest for both basic and targeted research.

PCR-based DNA markers enable the study of diversity and differentiation of marine organisms at different stages of their life cycle. Our study of European fiat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations aimed to describe their spatial and temporal dynamics. First, we analyzed adults sampled over the natural range of the species. An Atlantic/Mediterranean differentiation pattern was observed. Similar patterns of variation were found using allozymes, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA, aIl which support an isolation by distance model. High variability was observed in the range of diversity between populations using a mitochondrial marker, a reflection of small effective population sizes in sorne locations. A 10fold quantitative difference was observed in Fst,...

Do Sardinella aurita spawning seasons match local retention patterns in the Senegalese-Mauritanian upwelling region? ArchiMer
Mbaye, Baye Cheikh; Brochier, Timothee; Echevin, Vincent; Lazar, Alban; Levy, Marina; Mason, Evan; Gaye, Amadou Thierno; Machu, Eric.
Sardinella aurita is the most abundant small pelagic fish in the Senegalese-Mauritanian region. The success of its reproduction crucially depends on the local circulation as this determines whether larvae reach coastal nursery areas favorable to their survival or are dispersed into the open ocean. As a first step towards evaluating sardinella vulnerability to climate-driven hydrodynamical changes, this study aims at underpinning how transport pathways drive optimal spatial and seasonal patterns for sardinella reproduction. We have used two estimates of the Senegalese-Mauritanian coastal seasonal circulation simulated by two hydrodynamical model configurations that differ in their forcing and topography. Nursery areas are determined by evaluating coastal...

Do seedling functional groups reflect ecological strategies of woody plant species in Caatinga? Acta Botanica
Menezes,Tatiane Gomes Calaça; Rodal,Maria Jesus Nogueira; Lima,André Luiz Alves de; Lima,Lucivania Rodrigues; Pinto,Monalisa Alves Diniz S. C.; Melo,André Laurênio de.
ABSTRACT It is assumed that morphological traits of seedlings reflect different strategies in response to environmental conditions. The ecological significance of this has been widely documented in rainforests, where habitat structure and species interactions play an important role in community assembly. However, in seasonally dry ecosystems, where environmental filtering is expected to strongly influence community structure, this relationship is poorly understood. We investigated this relationship between functional groups of seedlings and life history traits and tested whether functional group predicts the ecological strategies employed by woody species to deal with the stressful conditions in seasonally dry ecosystems. Seedling functional groups, life...

Duality of trophic supply and hydrodynamic connectivity drives spatial patterns of Pacific oyster recruitment ArchiMer

The recent discovery of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (also known as Magallana gigas) spatfields in a Mediterranean lagoon intensely exploited for shellfish farming (Thau lagoon) revealed significant contrasts in spatial patterns of recruitment. We evaluated the processes that drive spatial patterns in oyster recruitment by comparing observed recruitment, simulated hydrodynamic connectivity and ecological variables. We hypothesized that spatial variability of recruitment depends on (1) hydrodynamic connectivity and (2) the ecology of the larval supply, settlement, metamorphosis, survival and biotic environmental parameters. We assessed recruitment at 6-8 experimental sites by larval sampling and spat collection inside and outside oyster farming areas...

Dynamique de la population de Sandre Stizostedion Lucioperca OceanDocs
Toujani, R.; Kraiem, M.M..

Lagarde, Franck.
The Mediterranean lagoons host many anthropogenic uses including shellfish aquaculture since the beginning of the 20th century. Imported in 1970, the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has adapted perfectly and has allowed an important development of oyster’s industry until 2008, the year of occurence of spat outbreak related to the emergence of an Ostreid Herpes-virus μvar. The scarcity of spat and the speculation on this product changed regionally cultural practices and the supply of juveniles, with in particular the wish of developing a local activity of spat collection. However the cycle of reproduction of the species and the recruitment of juveniles were poorly known in lagoon environments. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to...

Effect of nursery habitat degradation on flatfish population: Application to Solea solea in the Eastern Channel (Western Europe) ArchiMer
Rochette, S.; Rivot, Etienne; Morin, Jocelyne; Mackinson, S.; Riou, Philippe; Le Pape, Olivier.
Estuaries and coastal waters are essential nursery habitats for many marine species, and especially for flatfishes. Thus, investigating how anthropogenic disturbances affect the quality of these habitats is of major importance to understand their consequences on the population renewal of marine species. The aim of the present study was to analyse the effects of estuarine habitat degradation on the population of the common sole in the Eastern Channel, a key species in the fish community and fisheries in this area. We especially focused on the drastic drop in the surface area and on the low water quality of the Seine estuary, the main river of the Eastern Channel. A geographic Information System (GIS) was used to develop quantitative maps of sole nursery...

Dreves, Luc.
A nuclear power plant is set up at Flamanville (Channel; West coast of the Cotentin). For monitoring studies, one species (or a group of species) has been chosen in each major unit for a reference population dynamics study. Hard bottoms are covered by several species of barnacles. These species present different temperature affinities, and have reached here an equilibrium stage. The recruitment period of Balanus balanoides, the main species, has been determined. A relationship is established between the wintry temperature and the numerical importance of its spring recruitment.

Environmental and stock effects on the recruitment of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay : a multivariate analysis ArchiMer
Allain, Gwenhael; Petitgas, Pierre; Lazure, Pascal.
Variability in anchovy recruitment in Biscay is temptatively explained using variables from the stock and from the environment during the ichtyoplankton phase. Anchovy recruitment depends on many different processes : weight of adults and proportion of multiple spawners (age 2), river discharges, upwelling events at the coast and at the shelf break. Meteorological variables (wind, rain, tempe rature ) are forcing effects on the sea but they are not the effective processes that govern the production in the sea. So they do not relate directly to the survival of larvae and to recruitment. In Biscay, many different physical processes are active and used by anchovy which spawns in different physical systems (river plumes, open ocean enrichment systems)....

Epibenthic colonization on an artificial reef in a stressed environment off the north coast of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil BABT
Krohling,Werther; Zalmon,Ilana Rosental.
The influence of sedimentation and turbidity caused by the pluviometric precipitation and by the Paraiba do Sul River during the summer was investigated on an artificial reef along the north coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four recruitment and four cumulative plates were removed monthly (January 2002 to February 2003) from the external surface of the concrete reef modules. Empty space was not a limiting factor the recruitment. Turnover rate and structural difference index were higher in the first months and reflected low change in the species dominance during almost the entire study period. The high correlation between the precipitation and the empty space suggested that rain influence the recruitment and the succession. The recruitment was possible...

Bertelo, M.I.; Giberto, D.A.; Schiariti, A.; Bianca, F.; Suárez, J.; Mianzan, H.W..
The first results in the development of a standardized methodology to estimate Mnemiopsis leidyi intake rates and their impact on fish recruitment are presented. M. leidyi capability to consume lyophilized fish eggs and level of consumption of such type of preys, Artemia nauplii and rotifera were assessed. Although M. leidyi can consume lyophilized fish eggs, intake rates were extremely low, often null and in all cases lower than those estimated for the other types of preys offered. The increase of feeding rate on each prey was proportional to ctenophores size growth. The results observed suggest that consumption of fish eggs would not affect recruitment. However, there is not a uniform methodology in the literature that allows for standardized...

Marin, Jean.
The European red spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas) is the main target species of the small-scale fishery in Corsica. This fishery was described, its trends from 1981 to 1964 were analysed, and the exploitation conditions of the spiny lobster stock (fishing grounds, strategy and gear ; fishing regulations) were explained. Furthermore, the fishing effort and the yields were estimated through an indirect survey, in 1983 and 1984 . The growth was studied through tagging experiments. Growth increment per moult, Von BERTALANFFY's equation parameters, and moulting frequency were estimated for both sexes. Bias risks associated to tag loss at moulting were also analysed. In addition, estimates of K and L∞ variances were provided through "Jack-knife"...
